Rethinking school capital investment: driving educational reform post BSF
Wednesday 7 July 2010
In light of Education Secretary Michael Gove's announcement on Monday that the BSF programme is being scrapped, Ty Goddard, Director of the British Council for School Environments, commented on Radio Five Live's breakfast show yesterday morning, that he is hopeful that the review into the renewal of the school estate will find more creative ways to enable the much needed investment. He added that this should be less wasteful but still recognise that the school environment plays a vital part in the delivery of excellence in teaching and learning.
Ty also referred to the pamphlet published by Scott Brownrigg and Davis Langdon in conjunction with the BCSE, which offers guidance to schools and local authorities about possible new approaches to modernising existing schools.

Using lessons learnt
There is now a significant body of research that suggests that the physical environment of schools has a direct impact on students' academic achievement and behaviour. It is therefore critical that the recent achievements of the BSF programme are not completely abandoned in favour of a piecemeal and reactive approach.
A new approach
Scott Brownrigg can demonstrate how tactical interventions on specific areas can significantly improve learning environments for less money and with less disruption to learning. The key to achieving more from less lies with architects and interior designers employing their deep understanding of where the true value lies in existing buildings and then making inspired judgements, in partnership with our clients, on where limited resources should best be deployed to achieve the educational vision.
